Birding Top 500 Counter

Surrey Birders web site (launched October 2006) was created as a free resource for the bird watchers of Surrey and to give the existing Surrey Birders Yahoo group a presence on the world wide web. It provides a facility for members to submit sightings, track their own and other members sightings and to perform various searches of the sightings database

Surrey Birders is aimed at bird watchers of all skills and experience. Our members range from the complete beginner through to those with many years experience and knowledge.

The objectives of the site are to:

  • Record all bird sightings from around the county
  • Assist with the sharing of sighting information
  • Provide a searchable database of current and historic sightings
  • Promote the conservation of Surrey's vulnerable habitats
  • Provide an online year list for members sightings
  • Provide a forum for topics to be discussed
  • Provide RSS feeds for up to the minute sighting reports

The success of this site depends on the sightings you enter, whether these are from your balcony, your garden or somewhere you specifically visit to watch birds - no matter where it is, your sightings are important to us.

Should I report rare or sensitive species to the database?

If in doubt about whether to report a bird to the database, possibly due to concerns that a species may be disturbed if the report became public, then please forward the report to:

Surrey region:

Mr Jeff Wheatley. He can be contacted on:

sightings@surreybirdclub.org.uk

There are guide lines for reporting birds and these can be found at:

http://www.sbclub.ukonline.co.uk/

London Region (LNHS area)

Mr Steve Spooner. He can be contacted on

sjspooner@ntlworld.com

Who else will see the records?

All members have access to the database and can view records by area, species and member. In addition, the site will provide all sightings to the relevant County Bird Recorders who in turn may update BTO with the sightings.

Still have doubts about whether you are the type of person who would like to take part? Why not drop me an email and we can discuss any questions you may have.

We look forward to receiving your reports!
